When entering the world of aviation, the first big decision is choosing the right pilot license. In general aviation, there are two primary paths: the PPL (Private Pilot License) and the LAPL (Light Aircraft Pilot License). The LAPL license is intended for use within the European Union. It carries a restriction on the maximum takeoff mass of the aircraft, which must be no more than 2,000 kg. Additionally, the number of passengers is limited: besides the pilot, there can be a maximum of three passengers on board. On the other hand, a major advantage of the LAPL is the more lenient medical certificate requirements, making aviation accessible to a wider range of enthusiasts.
Average Completion Time
The duration of flight training largely depends on the student's activity and weather conditions. On average, obtaining a PPL license takes 12 to 18 months if flying regularly on weekends. With intensive training, this can be reduced to 6 months.
Completing the LAPL license is usually faster due to the lower hour requirement, taking an average of 8 to 12 months. Since the LAPL requires 15 fewer flight hours, it is often the preferred choice for those who want to reach a solo license more quickly and plan to fly mainly during summer vacations in their home country or neighboring regions.
